Aelin (Celaena) in Wendlyn
After the events of Crown of Midnight, Celaena travels to Wendlyn, supposedly to assassinate the royal family, but instead seeks answers from the Fae Queen Maeve. She is emotionally shattered by Nehemia's death and learns to confront her grief. Maeve assigns the Fae warrior Rowan Whitethorn to train her, who also has magical power in the form of Ice and water control. Rowan helps Celaena learn how to shift into her fae form and how to control her fire powers. Their relationship begins with mutual hostility but grows into deep trust and friendship.

Rowan helps Celaena embrace both her magic and her true identity as Aelin Galathynius, the lost Queen of Terrasen. They discover they are carranam, meaning their magic is uniquely compatible and can strengthen each other. This is proved when Rowan creates a cut which draws blood and Celaena does the same, mixed together she is able to fight with Rowans power. Aelin defeats powerful Valg forces, the 3 princes and saves the demi-Fae fortress of Mistward, proving she has accepted her destiny.

Chaol, Dorian, and Aedion (Aelin(Celaenas) cousin) in Rifthold
Chaol secretly works with the resistance after learning Celaena is Aelin at the end of Crown of Midnight. Aedion Ashryver, Aelin's cousin, is revealed to have secretly remained loyal to Terrasen despite serving Adarlan. Dorian's raw magical abilities continue to grow, forcing him to hide them from his father. Dorian falls in love with the palace healer Sorscha, who is secretly helping the rebels.

Manon Blackbeak
A new character is introduced in Heir of Fire, Manon Blackbeak, heir to the Blackbeak witches.
She is tasked with training her clan to ride wyverns for the King's armies and unexpectedly bonds with an injured wyvern named Abraxos instead of choosing the strongest mount. Abraxos was being used as a bait Wyvern for the strong beasts but Manon sees more and he sees her. This leads to him killing the strongers Wyvern to ensure they are bonded together. Manon is almost killed by the heir of the Yellowlegs clan but Abraxos manages to save her, the clans go head to head in the war games and Manon is named Wing Leader with Abraxos. However her growing compassion hints that she may not be as ruthless as her grandmother expects or wants her to be and she asked to kill a Crochan Witch which she does.

The ending to Heir of Fire concludes each story
Maeve reveals information about the Wyrdkeys, ancient magical objects central to the King's plans, but manipulates Aelin throughout their encounter. Rowan is freed from his blood oath to Maeve by Aelin and voluntarily swears the Blood Oath to Aelin, pledging his life to her. They are not yet romantically involved with one another. Aelin kills General Narrok and his creatures and news travels to all the lands that Aelin is alive and is ready to be Queen of Terrasen as well as being ready to oppose the King Of Adarlan and free all the lands from his control.
 
Back in Rifthold, everything falls apart, Sorscha is executed for aiding the rebels by the King of Adarlan. Aedion is imprisoned for treason. Dorian is captured by the King after he is forced to use his magic to protect and free Chaol. The King places a Wyrdstone collar on Dorian, allowing a Valg demon to possess and control him. Chaol narrowly escapes and sets out to find Aelin, knowing only she may be able to stop the King.
Celaena fully embraces her identity as Queen Aelin Galathynius in Heir of Fire and Rowan becomes one of her closest allies.

Main Characters

Aelin Galathynius (Celaena Sardothien) - Former assassin and the lost Queen of Terrasen. Travels to Wendlyn to train with the Fae and finally embraces her identity and magic.
Rowan Whitethorn - Powerful Fae prince and warrior. Assigned to train Aelin. Initially harsh and distant, but becomes her closest ally and friend by the end of the book.
Chaol Westfall - Captain of the Guard. Works against the King while trying to protect Dorian and help the growing resistance. Struggles with his feelings for Aelin and his changing loyalties.
Dorian Havilliard - Crown Prince of Adarlan. Develops dangerous magical abilities that he must keep secret. Falls in love with Sorscha.
Manon Blackbeak - Heir of the Blackbeak Ironteeth witches. Introduced for the first time in this book. Leads the Thirteen and forms an unexpected bond with her wyvern, Abraxos.
Aedion Ashryver - Aelin's cousin. A celebrated general serving the King. Secretly remains loyal to Terrasen and hopes for Aelin's return.
Maeve - Powerful Queen of the Fae. Aelin's aunt. Holds important knowledge about the Wyrdkeys but manipulates Aelin for her own purposes.
Sorscha - A healer in the royal castle. Helps Dorian control his magic. Becomes Dorian's love interest.
Abraxos - Manon's wyvern. Gentle, intelligent, and fiercely loyal despite being considered an unlikely choice.
The Thirteen - Manon's elite coven of witches. The most important members introduced are:
