Aelin Galathynius (formerly Celaena Sardothien) returns to Rifthold after the events of Heir of Fire. She has fully embraced her identity as the Queen of Terrasen and plans to rescue her cousin Aedion, save Dorian, and begin taking down the King of Adarlan.
Dorian is possessed by a Valg demon through a Wyrdstone collar that his father, the King of Adarlan put round his neck. Although the demon controls him, a part of Dorian is still trapped inside, waiting for a chance to break free.
Chaol has been leading the rebel movement in Rifthold. His reunion with Aelin is tense because he blames her for many of the kingdom's problems, while she is furious that he failed to protect Dorian and Aedion.
Over the course of the novel, they eventually forgive each other and rebuild their friendship. Aelin manipulates her former master, Arobynn Hamel, into helping her rescue Aedion while secretly plotting revenge against him. She also reunites with Lysandra, the courtesan from The Assassin's Blade, and discovers she is a powerful shapeshifter and the two become unexpected close allies.
Aelin successfully rescues Aedion from his public execution, during a party for his death at the castle, reuniting her growing court. Rowan, Aelins former lover in Heir of Fire, secretly arrives in Rifthold to help Aelin. Their relationship deepens significantly throughout the book, though they do not officially become mates or lovers yet but they clearly acknowledge their feelings for one another.
Arobynn believes he has outsmarted Aelin by giving her a supposedly magical ring that he attempts to put on her finger that would let him control her. She anticipated this, switched it for a fake, and later arranges for Lysandra to assassinate him. The assassination isn't a big part of the story, with Lysandra killing him in his sleep. Rowan and Aeodin switch out Arobynns real will and so Aelin inherits his fortune, which she plans to use to fund Terrasen's future war effort.
During a prisoner movement, Manon and her thirteen end up in a battle with Aelin and the rebels. Aelin ends up saving Manons life even though they are moral enemies. When Manon squares up to the King od Adarlan and Dorian she realises he is still alive even with the Valg prince inside him. Manon flies to Rifthold and leaves a message for Aelin in Valg blood stating that the "Human is still inside him" referring to Dorian.
Manon Blackbeak begins questioning the cruelty of her grandmother and the Duke of Perrington. She befriends Elide Lochan, a young woman imprisoned at Morath, and eventually helps her escape. She also discovers horrifying experiments involving witches and Valg demons, beginning her moral transformation.
Kaltain Rompier, was first introduced when Celaena was competing to be the kings champion. Long thought broken beyond recovery, uses the magical fire hidden inside her, known as Shadowfire, to destroy part of Morath's forces before sacrificing herself. When Vernon locks up Elide in a dungeon, Manon sets out to rescue her. Kaltain finds them both in the dungeon and offers to help them escape. Before dying, she gives Elide an important Wyrdkey to deliver to Aelin.
In the final battle, Aelin, Rowan, Chaol, Dorian, and their allies confront the King of Adarlan. Rowan destroys the glass clock tower, which had been suppressing magic across the continent. Magic immediately returns to the world.
Aelin manages to free Dorian from the Valg collar and forces him to remember her. Together they fight the King. Chaol sacrifices himself to give Aelin more time to save Dorian but is gravely injured and left paralyzed from the waist down. The King is finally killed by Dorian. Before dying, he briefly regains control of himself and reveals the truth:
Dorian becomes the new King of Adarlan. Chaol is appointed Hand of the King and later plans to travel south with Nesryn to seek healing and allies. Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, Evangeline, and Fleetfoot leave Rifthold and finally begin the journey to Terrasen to reclaim Aelin's kingdom.
Meanwhile, Manon flies to Rifthold, setting up future interactions with Dorian.
